Digital Video

Digital video is a good way to advertise for free. One good site that many people use is YouTube. YouTube uses progressive download to view videos, which means you only see what you download. They convert any files uploaded to FLV format.

There are many different types of codecs, including Quicktime, Windows Media, and Flash. Each codec has a different compression rate and each has its own pros and cons. No matter the codec there is always the problem of copyright.

This is relevant to my entrepreneurial idea because we can create videos and upload them on YouTube to advertise our business. Also, if we host videos on our site it's important to choose the right codec so everyone can view it. It'd also be important to choose either streaming or progressive download depending on the length of the video.

Network

We will need to have a circuit network for the phones and a packet network for internet. Our website will use the web protocol HTTP, which is a 4-step process between client and web server. For email we'll need to use IMAP so that people won't lose any messages.

Our domain will have to be something relating to our business, like LINES195.com or something of that sort. The domain is only an alias to help others remember how to get to the site. We can't just register a domain we have to through someone else, like GreatDomains or SnapNames.

This relates to my idea because we'll need email and telephones to communicate. Email and phones are important so we can help our customers. Also, we need a website to advertise our product.

Databases

A database is important for businesses. It eliminates the replication of information and creates one data source for the entire organization to use instead of many. It prevents inconsistent data by allowing employees to add, edit, and delete records.

By using relationships it links data (tables) making things much easier to find. Using SQL makes it extremely simple to create queries and find the information one is looking for. Databases also make it much easier to create and analyze forms.

This relates to my entrepreneurial idea because keeping things linked and accessible is extremely important in a business. A database would help keep everyone up to date on recent events. If a customer updates their contact information only one employee would have to update the database, then it would be accessible to everyone if they had to contact that customer. Also, it would enable employees to see each customer and what they purchased and where it was shipped etc. (a one to many relationship).

Spreadsheets

There are many ways to create spreadsheets. The most popular include Microsoft Excel, Calc (OpenOffice program like Excel but free), and Google Docs which is also free and online. Two important parts of spreadsheets include graphs and tables.

It's possible to create different graphs to show a visual of certain data. Also, inputting the data enables you to edit it and use pivot tables to exemplify results. For the most features Microsoft Excel and Calc are your best bet, online programs can only do so much.

This relates to my entrepreneurial idea because sales information and projected figures would need to be calculated. Spreadsheets are an important part for organizing data and analyzing them provides insight into what should be done to keep the business thriving. Customer information would be easy to analyze in a spreadsheet, with location and contact information it'd be simple to see where the product is being used.

Operating Systems

All the computers and servers the company uses will need operating systems to run properly. To save money we will probably be using Linux (at least for servers) since it's free. Linux was "originally" created by Linus Torvalds but is open-source.

Basically, anyone can view/edit the source code for Linux and there are therefore many different version out there. One popular one is called Ubuntu. Since anyone can view/edit Linux it basically belongs to everybody, although there are some companies that have their own version they charge for.

Operating systems are an important part of my entrepreneurial idea because without them none of the computers would run. We'd have hardware but we would be unable to run any software. The server hosting the website needs an operating system to actually be able to host it.

Computer Forensics - Privacy Protection

There are many issues with privacy and identity theft. When managing a computer it is important to keep your information secure. To do this, passwords are a must for anything important. Encrypting files is also a good idea, just as an added security precaution.

It is also important to have a firewall as well as anti-spyware and virus protection. This way, you're protected from almost all of the harmful things "floating" around out in cyberspace. Another important thing to protect against is stupidity. Making sure those working there are qualified and know what they're doing.

Whenever disposing of hard drives or removable media it is important to make sure they are completely trashed. This way, no one can dig them up and access classified information. DOD certified file wiping utilities, like BCwipe and Eraser can do the job. This connects to my idea because some of the data we will have, like customer information, will need to be disposed of properly so as not to compromise anyones information.

Hardware

Computer hardware includes both input devices, output devices, and the facilitators (in between). This ties into my entrepreneurial idea because to market my idea I will need a website which is information, which is stored on computer hardware (a hard disk drive). Also, the server the website is hosted on is made up of computer hardware.

Any people working with the company to market this idea will need computers and printers, etc. which is all under the computer hardware category. Also, the actual idea needs computer hardware to work. The prices will need to be stored on some sort of storage and there will need to be an output device that prints out a receipt.

A scanner could be used to check the purchases. Some type of display would be used to display prices. Also, the server containing the website would have lots of storage (hard drives) to hold various files and lots of memory to keep it "up" when people access it.
